Preemie Quilts
Preemie quilts are a perfect way to use up:
- Extra quilt blocks
- Orphan blocks
- Fat quarters
- Scraps of soft backing fabric (flannel, fleece, minky)
These small quilts may be little in size, but they’re big in comfort and love for the tiniest babies and their families. Every piece you repurpose helps make something meaningful. Thank you for giving your time and talents to this cause!
Important Notes:
- Please use soft fabric for the backing (flannel, fleece, or minky).
- No binding
- No batting
- Minimum size: 16" x 16"
- Maximum size: 20" x 22"
- Quilts do not need to be square — any shape within this range is great.
- Our preferred size is fat quarter–sized (18" x 22").
✂️ How to Make Your Quilt:
For a short video on how to make these - click here.
- Start with two pieces of fabric – one for the top, one for the back.
- For the backing, use a soft fabric like flannel, fleece, or minky.
(Please don’t use regular cotton fabric for the back – the quilt will be too thin for preemies.)
- Place right sides together and sew a 1/2 inch seam all the way around,
**leaving an opening to turn the quilt right side out.
- Turn the quilt right side out and push out the corners.
- Topstitch a ¼” seam all the way around the quilt’s edge,
making sure to close the opening securely.
- Add a few lines of stitching both horizontally and vertically.
to help it hold its shape during washing. (Just sewing a X will result in the quilt not holding it's shape when washing.)
